Fun little art toy

This is a really cool toy I got via email this evening. It looks like a blank page, but move your mouse and you're creating abstract art. Click to change colours.

Brave, brave woman

Jeff sent me this video and I had to post it. I've watched it half a dozen times and it's still freaking me out.

Breaking news...

And if you can't hear the sarcasm dripping off that one, you don't know me very well. Not a shocker, I'm 100% feminist.

I think, rather than personally trying to convert everyone I meet, it's much more challenging to accept people who don't think the way I do. I'm also aware that the former would result in generally bugging people all the time.

You Are 100% Feminist

You are a total feminist. This doesn't mean you're a man hater (in fact, you may be a man).
You just think that men and women should be treated equally. It's a simple idea but somehow complicated for the world to put into action.

Offensive Print Ad

Awhile back I posted a scan of an ad for "Rent a Wife" that was more ridiculous than it was offensive.

Today, I had planned to post some pictures from a recent whale watching trip. It's cute stuff; seals, a bald eagle, nice purple starfish.

But the ad below caught my eye on page 2 of a recent issue of Business Edge News Magazine and I just about vomited on the spot. That a club, group, whatever you call it, like this exists doesn't surprise me. That a reputable business publication would allow it to advertise does.

The best case scenario is that this publication doesn't understand and/or care about women, not worried about how blatantly an advertiser commodifies or objectifies us. Worst case is that they're intentionally alienating women, making a statement that we have no place in their business world.

My connection to the publishing business as a writer has made me aware of the importance of advertising revenue. That said, I believe a publication has a responsibility to be accountable for the messages and imagery in the ads it runs - especially in the front.

So here it is. Let the righteous indignation ensue...

And now the seals...

The Otters

We only want to save the cute animals, don't we? Yeah. Why don't we just have animal auditions. Line 'em up one by one and interview them individually.

"What are you?"
"I'm an otter."
"And what do you do?"
"I swim around on my back and do cute little human things with my hands."
"You're free to go."
"And what are you?"
"I'm a cow."
"Get in the f#!*ing truck, ok pal!"
"But I'm an animal."
"You're a baseball glove! Get on that truck!"

- Dennis Leary, No Cure for Cancer

Psst, look Merv... people are here! The one with the camera is watching us. Quick, hold my hand! They love that shit.

Huh, what? Hmmumblegrumble... I'm sleeping...

Just keep floating... just keep floating...

Hey, what the... get out of here Sal.

Listen, you wanna be a wall hanging, a hat, a stuffed statue?
No? None of the above? Then hold my freakin' hand!

Still gorging on X Files

"For the first time, I feel time like a heartbeat. The seconds, pumping in my breast like a reckoning. The numinous mysteries that once seemed so distant and unreal, threatening clarity in the presence of a truth entertained not in youth, but only in its passage. I feel these words as if their meaning were weight being lifted from me, knowing that you will read them and share my burden as I have come to trust no other. That you should know my heart, look into it, finding there the memory and experience that belong to you; that are you; is a comfort to me now as I feel the tethers loose and the prospects darken for the continuance of a journey that began not so long ago and began again with a faith shaken and strengthened by your convictions, if not for which I might never have been so strong now as I cross to face you and look at you incomplete, hoping that you will forgive me for not making the rest of the journey with you."

The introduction to "Memento Mori", the 15th episode of season 4 struck me as particularly beautiful. It may have been Gillian Andersen's delivery that brought it to life for me, but I thought I'd post it here to share nonetheless.

The passage above is the narration of a journal entry after Scully learns she’s dying of cancer. We can assume she’s addressing Mulder, but she doesn’t name him. It's not the sadness that struck me, but the illustration of her thoughts so eloquently transcribed and appropriate for her situation.
